A Morning of Feathered Friends and Surprises
I recently found myself with a canceled trip to Yellowstone Park, thanks to the forecast of howling winds. So, I decided to make the most of it and explore a nearby wildlife haven, the Market Lake Wildlife Management Area. Little did I know, this impromptu visit would turn into a captivating morning filled with unexpected encounters and a delightful array of waterfowl.
The Blackbird Battles and Baby Owlets
As I entered the lake from the north, I was immediately greeted by a lively scene. Male yellow-headed and red-winged blackbirds were engaged in intense territorial disputes, each claiming a tiny patch of land as their own. It was a fascinating display of avian aggression, with the birds fiercely defending their chosen spots. Amidst this commotion, I spotted a pair of baby great-horned owlets perched high in the trees, observing the chaos below with curious eyes. A detail that I find especially interesting is how these young owlets, despite their immaturity, were already displaying a sense of awareness and curiosity about their surroundings.
A Sora's Call and a Patient Wait
Amidst the blackbird's racket, I heard the distinct call of a sora. Knowing it would be a treat to see this elusive bird, I positioned myself strategically and waited patiently. It took about half an hour, but my persistence paid off as the sora finally emerged, allowing me to capture a few precious photographs. This experience highlights the importance of patience and observation in wildlife encounters. Often, the most rewarding moments in nature require us to slow down and truly immerse ourselves in the environment.
Owl Encounters and Harrier Chases
My journey continued along the North Windbreak, where I captured some beautiful shots of the owlets. As I headed south, I stumbled upon a hidden short-eared owl, which then proceeded to chase a female northern harrier gathering nesting materials. It was a thrilling display of nature's dynamics, with the owl's pursuit adding an element of suspense. Later, the owl faced another challenge as it was harassed by a protective female red-winged blackbird, defending her nest. Despite the obstacles, the owl successfully captured a rodent and delivered it to its mate, a heartwarming moment that showcases the resilience and resourcefulness of these birds.
A Diverse Waterfowl Parade
The lake also offered a delightful assortment of waterfowl. I spotted cinnamon teal, northern shovelers, greater scaup, ruddy, redhead, and mallard ducks. One hen mallard proudly led seven ducklings, while a pair of Canada geese had eight goslings in tow. Along the canal, I observed shorebirds like spotted sandpipers, willets, and killdeer, adding to the diverse avian spectacle.
The Elegance of a Great Egret
Just as the wind began to pick up, I spotted my second short-eared owl, a delightful surprise. But it was the arrival of a great egret that truly captivated me. This elegant bird landed near me, gracefully working its way along the canal in search of brunch. Its presence added a touch of royalty to the scene, a reminder of the beauty and dignity that birds can bring to our natural world. As I watched it fly away, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and gratitude for these fleeting moments of connection with wildlife.

As my journey came to an end, I found myself reflecting on the passage of time and the beauty of slow, mindful exploration.
